• Review • The Brow Bar opens in Durban

The Brow Bar, La Lucia || Jane Wonder

Hiya everyone

Eyebrows. Have they ever been as prolific as they are today? Cara Delevingne. Anastasia of Beverly Hills. A whole range of Benefit products...

As you may know, I moved to Durban last year. I had to find a new dentist, doctor, dermatologist, the works! But nothing scared me as much as finding a new person to 'do' my brows. By 'do' I mean threading (I am not a plucker) and the occasional tint.

Disaster struck... I had found someone I was happy with, a short man with slightly smelly breath - despite the minor case of halitosis he could shape my brows like a queen! Then he moved to Cape Town. Apprehensively, I visited his replacement after he left. I must have had that 'bad feeling' for a reason, she threaded them skew. My one brow had a 'completely' different shape to the other - I was horrified.

I was invited to visit a new brick-and-mortar store at La Lucia mall, solely dedicated to eyebrows! Finally, actual specialists - ones to trust with the delicate balance of my brows!

May I introduce Durban to - The Brow Bar

The Brow Bar, La Lucia || Jane Wonder

The Brow Bar opened in June in La Lucia Mall (over the way from Mr Price clothing, upstairs). Following the success of two Brow Bars in Johannesburg, Brow Queen and Lash Expert, Unaiza Moideen was on the quest to expand her services to Durban this June, creating the ultimate "Brows-on-Fleek" experience everywhere she goes!

The Brow Bar is South Africa’s first-ever franchised and patented, no-appointment, Express Brow and Lash bar with a range of services for both men and women. All in the name of better brows!

I had a lovely conversation with Unaiza, who was down from Joburg, where she measured and shaped my brows for me. Luckily my shape isn't too bad, but there is a bit of brow 'training' required for the ideal, even brow. Unaiza suggested I grab some Hi Brow, a serum for brows and lashes formulated with keratin and caffeine to promote thicker, fuller and healthier lashes and brows. It's R600 and should last about 3 months with daily use.

Overall, a great experience and was lovely to meet and chat with Unaiza! Please do check out their website here and go give a store a visit - appointment-free! They are situated at Clearwater Mall (Gauteng), Mall of the South (Gauteng) and La Lucia Mall (KwaZulu-Natal).

Here are some services that they provide:

Lash Perming (R600)
An eyelash perm is a face enhancing beauty treatment designed to give straight lashes an attractive upward curl and extremely curly lashes a reverse perm creating length without the daily need for lash curlers. Anyone with a particular busy schedule will appreciate the low-maintenance nature of lash perming.

Say farewell to thin and poorly maintained eyebrows, and hello to perfectly framed and sculptured brows with Brow Perfect individual eyebrow extensions. This revolutionary new treatment corrects sparse eyebrows, allowing you to achieve the brows you’ve always desired. Brow Perfect Extensions are light and comfortable, do not damage your natural brows, make your eyebrows look fuller and if well maintained they can last up to 10 days! The application is comfortable and relaxing, and you have a whole range of colours to choose from that match your natural eyebrows!

Forget the myths you have heard, threading is most natural, no side effects, non-chemical way of hair removal. Commonly practiced in Eastern countries like Egypt and India, the revolution has reached SA. Threading removes the entire hair follicle, lasting up to six weeks. Simply using a cotton thread, it is the most natural way to take care of your brows as there are no chemicals applied to the skin. Threading is great for people with ‘trouble’ brows and has this amazing ability to be so concise in the hair that it removes. It’s sworn by people who say they can never get their eyebrows even, despite tweezing or waxing.

Lash and Eyebrow Tinting (from R90)
Lash Extensions (from R500)
Henna (from R130)
Permanent Makeup, including Microblading (from R1800)

• Fashion • 6 Local Fashionistas to Follow on Instagram

Hiya everyone

I was thinking of doing some recommendations of people to follow on Instagram; fashion bloggers, beauty bloggers, travel bloggers, etc. There are so many international people to follow who have a very strong following and tons of influence, but why not talk about some local lasses instead?

So here are 6 beautiful ladies to follow on Instagram; their fashion sense is so enviable on their style is so on-trend. I have included 2 friends in this, I mention them not based on the fact that we are friends but because I truly admire their fashion sense!

Please comment below if you have any more for me to follow!

• Beauty • 5 Winter Lifesavers

Hiya everyone

I have lived in Durban for a year and half now after relocating from Joburg. I was excited to move as, though the humidity would frizz my hair, the air is not nearly as drying as Joburg air. Well well well, wasn't I pleasantly surprised.

18 months later and my skin and hair are still not used to this climate. My skin has been troublesome, giving me bouts of blemishes and an oily and/or dry texture depending on the weather du jour. To combat my blemishes, mostly hormonal of late, I have been using prescribed products that are very drying on the skin.

Despite escaping the freezing cold and dry Joburg, I still needed something to help me to keep my skin as moisturised as possible. Here are some of my winter beauty lifesavers

Winter Beauty Lifesavers || Soap & Glory Hand Food || Jane Wonder

• Soap & Glory Hand Food - £4.80

If you have read my blog then you probably know that I love Soap & Glory's Hand Food - it is my ultimate favourite hand cream and I use hand cream every. single. day. The scent is absolutely heavenly; shea butter, macadamia oil & marshmallow! I am not a fan of sickly, sweet scents in skin care and candles, but this is nothing like those.

The cream is suitable for both day and right-before-bed uses, it is super rich without being greasy. Sadly we don't currently have readily-available Soap & Glory products available locally.

I always stock up when I am in the UK. You can order on the Boots website here - Boots doesn't ship to Africa but you could always use a global service such as Aramex to get your goodies to South Africa.

Winter Beauty Lifesavers || Clarins Lip Comfort Oil || Jane Wonder

• Clarins Lip Comfort Oil - R280

I have been obsessed with this lip oil, and while it was pricey I have not regretted the purchase one bit! I save it for night time (although it isn't too oily or rich to use during the day) and apply every night before bed. I got mine at Edgars for R280, you can also buy it online from Red Square here.

Side note: I had a nightmare that I ran out of this lip oil, I think that shows how much I like it ;)

Winter Beauty Lifesavers || Eucerin Aquaphor || Jane Wonder

• Eucerin Aquaphor - R74.95

I have a friend at work that used to work at the company that makes and distributes Eurerin. She had been telling me for ages how she used Aquaphor for everything! Dry skin, cracked skin, dry lips, burns, alles. I eventually bought it since she scolded me for using Labello (which she says has alcohol in it!!!*) and I haven't looked back. I got mine at Pick 'n Pay but you can buy it at Dischem online here. I checked on the Clicks website too and it's R20 more!

*If your lip product has alcohol in it then it will moisturise your lips with immediate effect and then slowly dehydrate them again. A lot of people I know have tried to stay away from lip balms as they say that once you start your lips become 'dependent' on it. Well, this makes sense if it contains alcohol - it will force you to use the lip balm over and over since you keep moisturing and then dehydrating your skin!

Winter Beauty Lifesavers || dr.dermal The Omega Skin Oil || Jane Wonder

• dr.dermal The Omega Skin Oil - R675

My favourite skin oil around! I wrote about this face oil on my June/July monthly favourites here. In short, this skin oil is super hydrating without leaving an oil slick on your pillow. It sinks in beautifully and makes my skin feel fab in the mornings.

Omega oil helps in reinforcing the cell membrane and "help[s] reduce the body's production of inflammatory compounds - natural chemicals involved in the aging process, that affect how healthy the skin looks and feels" - according to dermatologist and skin care expert Nicholas V. Perricone in his book The Wrinkle Cure.

PS. dr.dermal has just updated their website, it launched today, go have a look! drdermal.co.za

Winter Beauty Lifesavers || Nivea In-Shower Body Moisturiser || Jane Wonder

• Nivea In-Shower Body Moisturiser - R49.95

I'm lazy - there I said it! It is such a chore for me to put on a full layer of moisturiser just after I get out of the warm bath and shower. The Nivea In-Shower Body Moisturiser is great as I just slather it on whilst in said-warm bath/shower, rinse off, and my bod is ready for pjs. I also like that it is not too rich and sticky, just a nice thin layer for every-day use. You can buy it at Dischem online here

When I write a blog post I find prices and links online, I also mention the cheapest option. Through doing this, I have noticed that Dischem is almost always the winner with their pricing. I'm glad I do most of my shopping there, but I think I shall be doing all of my shopping there from now on! You can find your nearest Dischem store here.

June and July Favourites ♡

Hiya everyone

Monthly favourites time! We have some new skincare products and I even have an awesome discount code to share, be sure to read the whole post ;)

I have looped two months into one post as I took all the photos for June favourites and they came out terribly. I hate to post mediocre work so I decided to scrap it. Photographing the images take so long and lighting is very important. I had some time over the public holiday last week to take the photos again and I am much happier how they turned out

Jane Wonder || June and July Favourites

Jane Wonder || June and July Favourites - The Body Shop Lightening Drops

• The Body Shop Lightening Shade Adjusting Drops - R330

If you are yet to hear about this product then you are missing out. This is a super popular product at the mo and it lives up to all the hype. It does exactly what it says. It lightens your foundation if it is too dark for you, if you've lost your tan, or you spent your hard-earned money on a shade that isn't quite right.

Drugstore foundations have a very limited shade range, most of the time, and even the lightest shade is a tad too dark for me. Also, a lot of lighter shades have a yellow undertone, which is the same as my skin. It makes my skin look terribly yellow ☹

Add a couple drops to your daily quantity of foundation using the pipette, mix it together and apply per usual. I am lusting over the darkening shade too, but for the time being I am adding a too-dark foundation to my lighter foundation to get the perfect colour.

Jane Wonder || June and July Favourites - dr.dermal

• dr.dermal MicroRetinol 5 Rich Repair and The Omega Skin Oil - R895 and R675

dr.dermal is a relatively new brand straight out of Durban, South Africa. It is the first dermatologist-, plastic surgeon- and international award-winning chemist-developed range of cosmeceuticals. These niche products are designed to fulfill the needs of all prematurely ageing South Africans who are looking for cutting-edge formulations that are competitively priced. The active ingredients that they use are great, such as retinol, glycolic acid, hyaluronic acid, and niacinamide.

My two fave products for the last month have been the MicroRetinol 5 Rich Repair cream and The Omega Skin Oil.

The MicroRetinol 5 Rich Repair is a repairing cream enriched with advanced microencapsulated retinol, ceramides & cutting edge peptide technology. It is suitable for anti-aging, environmentally damaged skin and problematic skin. It's also a great prevention of premature aging (hello 30th birthday around the corner). Each dose delivers ±850 IU of pure retinol and the time release delivery reduces risk of irritation. Still, if you haven't been using a retinol cream before it is wise to start off using about twice a week and building up use over time.

The Omega Skin Oil is heavenly. It is perfect for winter as the oil is super hydrating, I am even showcasing it again in my 'Winter Lifesavers' post coming soon. It is also suitable for anti-aging and environmentally damaged skin, and it's great for dry skin. I have been using a retinoid for my unusually bad skin which is very drying, so I have been slathering the Omega Oil on at night to start combating this.

You can find your nearest dr.dermal stockist on their new website here

Jane Wonder || June and July Favourites- ColourPop Ultra Satin Lips in Magic Wand, Echo and Frick n' Frack

• ColourPop Ultra Satin Lips - $6

I am utterly obsessed with ColourPop Ultra Satin Lips! Seriously... The formula is amazing, relatively long-lasting, comfortable on the lips, colour pay-off is incredible and they have super awesome colours. I had been lusting over ColourPop for ages and then had the opportunity to order some goodies through winning a competition on Pink Peonies Blog. I am so glad that I decided to get the satin formula over the matte one - I have heard that the matte one, like so many brands, is quite drying.

As per my swatches above, I chose nude shades Magic Wand, Echo Park and Frick 'n Frack. Other colours I am lusting over are Lyin' King, Tansy, Dohee and Brooklyn.

ColourPop is sadly only available in the US, but if you use a service such as Aramex then it's relatively easy to get your hands on these babies. The website is here.

Jane Wonder || June and July Favourites - Dove Nourishing Body Wash in Shea Butter and Warm Vanilla

• Dove Nourishing Body Wash in Shea Butter and Warm Vanilla - R37.95

One of my holy grail body washes (along with Soap & Glory Whipped Clean Luxe Cream Wash Shower Butter). I have been using the Shea Butter and Warm Vanilla Nourishing Lotion for years and it smells heavenly. When I saw that Dove had released a body wash I knew I had to get my hands on it.

My housemate works at Unilever and she sometimes picks up goodies for me from the store they have at their office. She said that this body wash isn't even available in their store at a reduced price because it's too popular - all stock must go to stores! So, I went out and spent my own money on it, I can't live without it. It's the perfect winter product; gorgeous scent, rich and it doesn't dry your skin even through it is soap-like. You can get these online at Dischem and Clicks.

*Did you know: Clicks has recently added online shopping to their website! Great news, however the body wash in this fragrance isn't available on the site

Jane Wonder || June and July Favourites - Daniel Wellington Classic St Mawes 36mm in Rose Gold

• Daniel Wellington Classic St Mawes 36mm in Rose Gold - $169

Daniel Wellington reached out to me a few months ago and asked if I would like to provide my readers with a discount code to purchase their gorgeous watches online. Obviously I wouldn't say no to that! They sent me a watch that I chose from their website, I went with a classic, namely the Classic St Mawes. I went with a large face, the 36mm, and chose a rose gold finish ('cos duh).

Daniel Wellington with ship internationally for free if you purchase online, however you need to be aware of customs fees since it is an international purchase.

I have a 15% discount code available to my readers, use the code "janeDW" upon check out and get about $30 off the original price (that's R410 off!!).

I have been lusting over this watch for a couple years now. I was scrolling through my Facebook timeline the other day and I saw that on 3 Feb 2016 I posted a link and said "I've wanted a Daniel Wellington watch for aaaages". It really is a dream come true to receive one of these stunning timepieces and I am determined that I actually manifested it through all my wishes over time.

My discount code is valid until 15 September 2016, so get purchasing! Their site is www.danielwellington.com

*The price I have included is a rounded up cost when you use my discount code.

Jane Wonder || June and July Favourites - ShowMax

• ShowMax

The best thing I ever did to my DStv viewing experience... I've had DStv for years and while I still watch series and movies on DStv I find that the selection has dwindled a bit with competitors such as Netflix coming to the local market.

Recently, DStv has joined forces with video on demand service ShowMax. It's simple, add the R99 subscription to your internet-connected DStv Explora premium or compact contract (you must be a debit order customer) and then you can access 20,000 episodes of series, movies and more. There are box sets of popular shows, so you can watch the TV series from season 1! I finally get to start Game of Thrones since I have all the episodes  There's also no more streaming of series off my computer and connecting my laptop to my TV by HDMI cable (hack) so I can watch on a big screen.

Series is my jam, especially the crime and mystery genre, and with ShowMax I have already watched 4 seasons of Criminal Minds (mentioned in this blog post). Other series include Suits, Elementary, The Good Wife, Friends, Big Bang Theory, Mr Robot, Pretty Little Liars and a whole lot more!

You even get a free trial for one week to see if it meets your needs. You can also watch ShowMax directly through your DStv and a PC, laptop or tablet. I am a serious fan of this DStv and ShowMax collab, and whilst it seems like this is a sponsored post it is really not!

Jane Wonder || June and July Favourites - NikkieTutorials

• NikkieTutorials

My fave YouTuber of the month is NikkieTutorials! Now, she has been around for years and I have even been subscribed for ages, but she has just been killing the game lately! Her makeup skills are stellar and I can spend hours learning from her tutorials and laughing at her (with her) off-the-cuff humour. Here are some of my recent faves:

Purple Glam Smokey Eyes - Too Faced x Nikkietutorials Collection Tutorial
Strawberry Eye-Makeup Snapchat Filter Inspired Tutorial

Jane Wonder || June and July Favourites - The Catch TV Series on DStv and MNet

• The Catch

Shona Rhimes does it again! Good heavens I am addicted to this series, I finished season 1 last week and I am devastated! The plot is (and I am not giving anything away) centered around Alice (Mireille Enos, of The Killing) and Christopher/Ben (Peter Krause, of Dirty, Sexy, Money). The start of the series introduces them and their engagement plans, it also introduces us to Alice's private investigation firm that she runs with her bestie Valerie (Rose Rollins, of The L Word). We are shocked to learn that Christopher is not what he seems and Alice ends up a victim of fraud by her very own fiancĂ©, ironic as she is currently on the hunt for Mr X - who is Christopher! She vows to find him and get her revenge, and all the money she stole from her clients. Every episode we also get to experience a job that she works on with her PI firm and a job that he works on with his fellow fraudsters. As I said, I am addicted and cannot wait for season 2 to come out next year!

That's it for favourites - quite a lengthy one! Any faves you can share with me? Comment below ♡

• Review • Tranquility Spa in Westville

Jane Wonder || Review: Tranquility Spa in Westville

Hiya everyone ♡

I hope you're having a wonderful day so far.

The lovely Nicolette sent me an email a month or so ago and asked if I would like to visit her spa, Tranquility, for a complementary treatment. I haven't visited a spa in ages so a morning to relax was right up my alley. She offered me a back, neck and shoulder massage - my favourite! I sent a response right away saying I would absolutely love to take her up on her offer and made an appointment.

Now, beauty bloggers often get generous offers from brands to review their products. We are in no way obligated to, but prefer to mention something special that we really want to share with our readers. When I visited Tranquility I wanted to find something that set it apart from other spas, something that made it special and would want to make me return.

Now, I am usually one for wanting a peaceful, quiet massage with soft, instrumental music, but Nicolette and I got talking based on the nature of my visit. We spoke about her background and about the spa itself. I then mentioned to her that I hate it when someone is giving me a massage and simply goes with their usual massage routine. If I have a knot, then I want someone trained to help me get rid of it. After mentioning that, Nicolette went in to tell me about her 'passion for muscles' (so to say) and started paying extra attention to my knotty spots and talking me through them.

The moment I had been waiting for happened when she was kneading my neck and asked "do you wear glasses?" I mean, have you ever received a question like that whilst getting a massage? Nicolette explained that the muscle that was a bit tight in my neck was linked to my ocular-specific muscle group and that she could tell that I strain my eyes by the tightness of said muscle. I knew then that her expertise in muscle therapy and sports massage was which set her apart from other beauticians.

Jane Wonder || Review: Tranquility Spa in Westville

I asked Nicolette a few questions about herself and her spa. Here are her answers;

I began Tranquility four years ago while I was in my second year at Camelot International. I worked from home while I studied and saved every cent and reinvested it back into the business by buying equipment and stock. After college I rented a small spot in Westville attached to a dance studio and eventually needed more space, and so the business moved twice more in expansion until I found my current spot in which I have been at for about a year.

Jane Wonder || Review: Tranquility Spa in Westville

What is your area of expertise?

My specialty is with muscle injury rehabilitation. To achieve this I use a mix of sports massage and other machines that are beneficial to the muscles. My extensive knowledge of the muscles and nutrition as well as my strength has greatly set me apart from other therapists. If your problem is muscular I can definitely help you, and if it is something more serious I will be able to tell you what it is and where to get the best treatment.

Jane Wonder || Review: Tranquility Spa in Westville

I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Tranquility, had a little tour and a chat to one of the ladies that works with Nicolette. My massage was great, Nicolette gave me great after-care advice (considering all the rather intense muscle work she performed) and I went home feeling relaxed and well-looked after. The spa is tucked away in a quiet spot in Westville that is a close enough to the N3 highway to not make the travel too far. There is plenty parking and little extra offerings that I don't often find when I go for a treatment. I didn't need to dump all my goodies in a corner like I usually do, I hung up my clothes on a hanger and deposited my valuables in a little plastic container for safe-keeping.

I would really recommend giving them a visit, their treatments are really affordable and if you're looking for a good muscle work-out then Nicolette is the girl for you!
